Lint slips past the trap on every single load. It packs the duct walls until the dryer can't push heat out — so the heat stays in, and the lint that caused it is one of the most flammable things in your house.
Why it matters
Everything else is a footnote. A blocked vent is dangerous, and it's expensive.
Dryer lint is one of the best fire starters there is — campers carry it on purpose. Pack it into a duct with a heat source at one end and nowhere for that heat to go, and the outcome writes itself. Failure to clean is the leading cause of home dryer fires.
Most of these fires start in a vent nobody had looked at in years, in a house where everything else was maintained.
When exhaust can't get out, moisture stays in the drum. Clothes come out damp, you run a second cycle, and you pay for both. A restricted vent can add a large share to what your dryer costs to run.
It also cooks the appliance. Heating elements, thermal fuses, and control boards fail early on a dryer that overheats every load — and a new dryer costs many times what a cleaning does.
